A Death that Began a LIfe
I do not know his pain
Every inch of my body begins to ache
I stand--watching as the hope sluggishly drains
His body did crumble, his spirit did break
Although he may be “the enemy”
Sorrow engulfed me, the guilt crept up
He had a life, once a loving family
He, not old enough to know true love,
I was only following orders, right?
Had I not shot him, had he shot me?
An evil consumes me the more I fight
I’ve become the monster I refuse to be.
I pause to mourn the life now lost
I was here to defend my country
This boy, too, unaware of what freedom might cost
Around me the chaos continues
Does the world not know the pain felt here?!
Each and everyday death pursues
We fight using all we have left: fear.
Did God intend for it to be this way?
My country in ruins, unable to begin anew
If I died, would it matter anyway?
After this will Germany even pull through?
Yes. It must. I am willing to give my life so it might
I refuse to let these men die in vain
I will fight until my dying breath
When that moment comes I want to say
“For Germany, I fought until my dying day.”
I do not know his pain
Every inch of my body begins to ache
I stand--watching as the hope sluggishly drains
His body did crumble, his spirit did break
Although he may be “the enemy”
Sorrow engulfed me, the guilt crept up
